For the past five months I've been working with Dallas-based photographer Toni Maxwell to create a visual aesthetic that matches the book.

Before she even took one photo, she read the manuscript twice. After that, we began a series of conversations. As a native Texan she gave me valuable insight into the people, city and culture. Toni then mapped out a strategy and got to work. She contacted the Dallas courts and arranged to photograph the court room where Toronto's trial took place. She photographed the key locations referenced in the story and spent hours in some of Dallas' dodgier sections in search of the images that captured her experience of the story.

The Dallas-based photographer is the eyes behind the Make Me Believe novel. Toni's commitment and understanding of the novel proved especially important as she located the scenes from above.

Hopefully the images above give you a better idea of what the novel's urban setting feels like.
