Several sections of the book take place inside a blues club in South Dallas. In order to capture the mood and feel of the establishment, I listened to blues artists like Howling Wolf, R.L. Burnside, B.B. King, Stevie Ray Vaughn and Otis Taylor. To capture the essence of South Dallas, I listened to southern rap artists like UGK, Geto Boys, Scarface, Hot Boyz, OutKast, and Paul Wall. To capture the Bible Belt I listened to gospel artists like Mahalia Jackson, Waylon Jennings, and Kurt Karr. I also listened to southern soul artists like Gladys Knight, Erykah Badu, Anthony Hamilton, and Al Green. Bruce Springstein (Dead Man Walking), Johnny Cash (Give My Love to Rose), The Ramones (Believe in Miracles), DMX (Ready to Meet Him), Eminem (I'm Not Afraid) and Alabama (If You're Gonna Play in Texas) rounded out my playlist.
As the team developed so did the music. Everyone added their own flair to the mix and together we created an eclectic soundtrack to vibe to as we worked. Along with the manuscript, music has aligned us all from the outset.
